Joshua Phelps and Edith Torres (picture with President Earl Murray) visited the Rotary Club of Vandenberg Village as the guest speakers during Friday’s morning meeting.

Joshua and Edith are both in the 9th grade and attend Lompoc High School. The Rotary club sponsored them at the Rotary Youth Leadership Awards program for district 5240 in April 2018. This is a leadership program coordinated by Rotary Clubs around the globe.

RYLA goals are too:
  • Demonstrate Rotary's respect and concern for youth;
  • Provide an effective training experience for selected youth and potential leaders;
  • Encourage leadership of youth by youth;
  • Recognize publicly young people who are rendering service to their communities.
Every RYLA program covers the following core topics:
  • Fundamentals of leadership
  • Ethics of positive leadership
  • Importance of communication skills in effective leadership
  • Problem-solving and conflict management
  • Rotary's purpose and service to the community
  • Building self-confidence and self-esteem
  • Elements of community and global citizenship
Here is what Joshua and Edith had to say about their three day experience.
Joshua stated he learned that a part of leadership is self-motivation and taking a look at what motivates him to be a leader. He said leadership helps him to think outside the box, which allows for creativity and innovation. He said the classes were engaging working in groups and the team lessons help to build trust with others. The advice he would give someone about attending would be to expect the unexpected.

Edith stated she learned that a part of leadership is an ability to inspire and influence people or groups. She learned about diversity and how people have personal differences. The advice she would give someone about attending would to not be shy and live to the fullest. Another part of leadership and growth is belonging to school clubs. Edith belongs to the Associated Student Body and Yogi clubs. These experiences help to grow in leadership.

Joshua and Edith thanked the club members for sponsoring them.

The Rotary Club of Vandenberg Village thanked them for a very informative talk.
