Ruth Corona (pictured with Rotary Club President Earl Murray Jr.) was the guest speaker at this morning’s meeting. She is a Victim Witness Program Advocate from the District Attorney’s office in Santa Maria. She talked about the various senior scams that adults encounter.

Ruth supports the Elder and Dependent Adult Advocacy and Outreach Program. This program is designed to assist seniors who are being scammed by individuals out take their money or other possessions. The victim’s are being targeted for these types of scams:

Telephone, Grandparent, Kidnapping, Utilities, Fake Sheriff, Technical Support, Tax or IRS, Sweepstakes and Foreign Lottery, and Sweetheart scams.

She the scammers will try increases your emotions to get you in a vulnerable state, where you are not thinking rationally to make what they are saying believable. They are trying to scam you and take what you own.

She mentioned mail theft and identity theft where these scammers are attempting to steal from you. An example she provide was in your mailbox. Placing checks in a mailbox are not a good idea, or giving out your personal information.

The best practices are to protect your privacy and security. Do not give out your personal information on social media, or over the telephone when you do not know them. This applies to any other communication device. Protect your assets and yourself from this.
